Vegan Hot Dogs

 

Hey guys,

I wanted to try and make a vegan hot dog because I thought that after all my weird recipes for Veganuary, and all the fast food things that were out and in the media… There were no hot dogs? Like where are the hot dogs? And I wanted to create a sort of protein alternative that you could make from scratch. So here we go!

Ingredients 

  • Button Mushrooms

  • Tofu (marinated)

  • Lentil Flour

  • Bread Flour

  • Tomato Puree

  • Paprika (smoked)

  • Bread Crumbs

  • Pepper

  • Sage

  • Salt

  • Mustard

  • Hot Dog Buns

  • Garnish and Sauces of your choice!

So the first thing you need to do is finely chop up the mushrooms, I used the white flesh and not much of the dark underside as I wanted to make the look of the sausage pink? Sort of like a hot dog? So cook that out and then add in some marinated tofu pieces, I got some that was like prebought and mince like. I used half a packet and blended everything with a tbsp of sage, half of pepper, two of smoked paprika, a large desert spoon of tomato puree and a cup of lentil flour. You can add garlic or onion powders but I just blended everything together.

As it binds, you either get a wet or a dry dough from the mixture and the way I did it was to just add some plant milk to the mix until you can roll it. It’s not a lot of cooking you jus want to soften the mushrooms and blend it so everything comes together. Grease a baking tray and roll into sausages, now I’d probably use more of a binder as when they cooked they sort of crumbled because of the mix of flours, but the taste was amazing and a combo of Quorn and a more softer texture. It’s yummy anyway!

Now you just have to wait for 20 minutes for the dogs to cook out. I got some white buns, I added some sauerkraut from my recipes this week, some green pickled peppers and some mustard seeds. You guys know I adore anything with spice and tang so I overloaded them to my taste.

I chose some BBQ sauce coming for Issue 3, some american mustard, some chia seeds, scallions, and a number of spices and fries to make a massive meal to share with your friends for a night in. You can cut them in half and swap them as they’re jumbo but they are so easy, and not at all intimidating.
